What Is a Process?

A process is series of definable, measurable and interconnected value generating activities through which a specific set of inputs are converted to an output of specific benefit for the customer. According to this definition, a process may stay within a function or passes through various functions in an entity. In other words, a process is a group of interconnected and mutually affected transactions conducted for the purpose to complete a task.

Webster defines process as a series of activities. A process is to produce value out of inputs through execution of interconnected activities. Inputs are put to the left and increased value is put to the right of the process (Jablonski, 1994). This value may be a product, a service or information which meets the needs and expectations of a customer. Almost every thing done in an entity is a chain of processes. However, some of these processes are crucial processes that are directly interrelated with success of the job. Such processes, in most cases, passes through functions.
